Machine Embroidery File Formats Explained: PES, JEF, DST and More

Machine embroidery files come in different formats, and the right one depends on the embroidery machine you use. Choosing the correct file format before transferring a design helps avoid unnecessary conversion problems and makes the stitching process much easier.

Common machine embroidery file formats

PES is commonly used by Brother, Baby Lock and some other machines. JEF is widely used by Janome machines. DST is a very common commercial embroidery format and is supported by many brands. EXP, HUS, VP3 and XXX are also used by different embroidery machine families and software.

Not every embroidery machine accepts every format. Before downloading a design, check your machine manual or the file types shown in your embroidery software. On Marcia Embroidery product pages, you can compare the available formats with the format required by your machine.

File format is only one part of compatibility

A design can be available in the correct format and still be too large for your machine. Always check the embroidery dimensions and compare them with the maximum embroidery area of your hoop. A 4 x 4 inch hoop, for example, cannot stitch a design that is larger than its usable embroidery field.

For this reason, it is best to choose the correct size from the versions included with the design rather than resizing an embroidery file significantly after digitizing. Large changes can affect stitch density, underlay and registration.

Where to find machine embroidery files

You can browse our full machine embroidery designs, or explore themed collections such as Baby Girl Embroidery Designs, Safari Embroidery Designs and Woodland Animals Embroidery Designs.

Before purchasing, check both the file format and design dimensions listed on the product page. That simple step is the easiest way to confirm whether a design will work with your embroidery machine and hoop.
